We could elect two new Democrats

Powered by People is doing the work right now to elect Democrats in 2022 and beyond.

Powered By People

Jason, did you see the news this week?

Texas gained the most residents in the past decade of any state according to the 2020 census – and as a result, Texas is the only state that will be gaining TWO new congressional seats.

This represents a huge opportunity for change in the 2022 elections. This could mean sending two new Democrats to the House of Representatives, and the reapportionment of the State Legislature means we can take back power at every level. But we still don't know how the new districts will be drawn and with 2022 a midterm election – an election historically difficult for the president's party – we can't take anything for granted.

If we're going to take advantage of this opportunity, we need to step up now ahead of our end-of-month fundraising deadline tonight at midnight. Please, chip in now to support our work to register more voters and elect more Democrats in 2022 and beyond.

Contribute $10

Powered by People isn't funded by corporations or lobbyists, we're powered by grassroots supporters like you chipping in when they can. If you make a contribution today, here's exactly where your donation will go:

  • Voter registration: Every week Powered by People helps Texans become certified Volunteer Deputy Registrars. And as certified VDRs, Powered by People volunteers go out in their communities during our canvass efforts to knock on doors and register new voters.

  • Fighting back against voter suppression: Powered by People has organized to fight back against SB 7 and HB 6, two bills rapidly moving through the Texas State Legislature with dangerous repercussions for voting rights. In March, hundreds of volunteers traveled across Texas to testify against these two bills at the state capitol.

  • Organizing in response to pressing community needs: During the winter storms, Powered by People volunteers stepped up to connect Texans with water, food, shelter, and transportation, made welfare calls, and even went door-to-door checking on our neighbors.

Jason, Powered by People is doing the work right now to elect Democrats in 2022 and beyond. If you're in, will you chip in $10 or any amount that's meaningful to you before tonight's end-of-month deadline at midnight?

Thank you for being a part of this,

Registering voters and helping Texas

Powered by People volunteers are pushing hard on all fronts.

Dear Jason,

I'm reaching out about SB 7 and HB 6, two voter suppression bills being pushed by Texas Republicans in the state legislature.

Last month, Powered by People helped organize hundreds of people to testify against these bills in the Texas capitol. Folks drove from all over - as far away as El Paso, Nacogdoches and Del Rio - to stand up for the right to vote. They shined a light on legislation that would make it harder for Texans with disabilities, working Texans and Texans of color to vote and gave us a fighting chance to stop it by mobilizing public sentiment.

Will you help fund this work and support these courageous Texans standing up for voting rights by making a donation?

Contribute $10

Texas is already the most voter suppressed state in the country and these bills will make it even tougher for people to vote. They include provisions that would restrict early voting access, make it harder for Texans with disabilities to get assistance to vote and would give "poll watchers" free rein to intimidate voters.

With our democracy at stake, Powered by People volunteers are doing all we can to fight back. We're testifying at public hearings, engaging with voters across the state and signing up to register voters in record numbers, ensuring that we are ready to meet future voters where they are and get them on the rolls. Join us in this work to preserve democracy and fight for voting rights in Texas with a donation of $10 today.

Grateful to have you in this fight with us.

Fwd: I'm personally inviting you

By having these conversations now, instead of waiting until right before an election, we can create relationships that can make a difference in how these communities vote in the future.

Powered By People

Hi Jason – I wanted to make sure you saw Kate's email about our upcoming virtual phone bank on Tuesday, April 27th.

We'll be calling previously identified Democrats in Webb County to check in with them about the issues most important to them.

Can you join Beto and other Powered by People volunteers to make phone calls at 6:30PM CT on Tuesday? We'll go through all of the information you need to get started and you can join from wherever you are!

As Beto said, Texas communities that border Mexico, including Webb County, are on the forefront of critical policy issues including immigration, trade, and voter suppression. With the potential for much higher turnout in future elections, these communities could decide the future of Texas.

By having these conversations now, instead of waiting until right before an election, we can create relationships that can make a difference in how these communities vote in the future. If you're ready to join this fight, click here to sign up for Tuesday's Webb County phone bank.

Thank you!

Jason,

I'm personally inviting you to join Beto and Powered by People volunteers next Tuesday, April 27, at a virtual phone bank to call voters in Webb County.

I've joined Beto on too many phone banks to count, but it doesn't matter how many numbers I've dialed – it's always a special experience.

I love connecting directly with Texans over the phone. It's one of the easiest and most efficient ways to hear what's on voters' minds and always ends up reminding me just how much we all have in common.

Some of the most prevalent concerns that come up when we're talking with voters are school funding and teacher pay, COVID-19 relief, the pandemic response, affordable healthcare, voter suppression, jobs that pay a living wage, and corruption – all issues I often find myself worrying about.

If you're free next Tuesday, will you commit to joining Beto and Powered by People volunteers at our Webb County phone bank? Everyone is invited and conversational Spanish speakers are encouraged to attend!

What’s in Laredo?

Dear Jason,

United States voter turnout in 2020, as a percentage of registered voters, was 77%. Highest turnout in more than a century.

In Texas it was 67%. Nothing to brag about, but it's better than we've done in decades.

And in the key border community of Laredo? Turnout was only 50%.

Why? Understanding the answer to this question could help determine the outcome of future Texas elections.

That's because the Texas counties that border Mexico represent roughly 10% of our state's population (around three million people). They also happen to be on the forefront of critical policy issues of immigration, trade, and voter suppression. They could decide our next governor, our next U.S. Senator, our next President and whether we are a "Red" or a "Blue" state.

But only if these communities turn out in higher numbers.

Much like Laredo, El Paso county turnout was low, just 56% of registered voters in 2020. Hidalgo was 54%. Cameron 52%. And only 51% of registered voters turned out in Starr county.

So why aren't people voting? And what will it take for them to vote in the future?

I figured the best way to get the answers to these questions was to ask the voters themselves. So this past weekend I drove down to Laredo and joined a few dozen other Powered by People volunteers to knock on doors and literally meet voters where they are.

Beto O'Rourke talking with a Laredo resident

Working with Laredo-based organizers, we developed a script that allowed our volunteers to get a deeper sense of what's going on in the lives of these voters and how they make decisions around elections.

Can you help fund this work by making a donation?

When a voter answered the door, we introduced ourselves and asked how they and their families were doing. Any damage from burst pipes following the winter storm? Have you been able to get vaccinated? Your family doing ok?

Beto O'Rourke listening to a Laredo resident

We'd then ask them about the 2020 election. Were you happy with the results? Was there anything that kept you from voting last time? What are your thoughts on why so few people in Laredo vote? What would it take for you and others in your life to vote in the future?

We'd conclude by asking them questions about the future. When it comes to the next election, what's important to you and your family? How likely are you to vote in 2022?

These were long conversations, they might take 20 or 30 minutes or even longer. Many of the conversations were in Spanish. Some in English. A lot of them in both Spanish and English. We really got a sense of what moves these voters and why they haven't been moved to vote so far.

Laredo resident talking with Beto O'Rourke

As we review the hundreds of conversations we had this weekend, we see trends and issues that stand out. The things that voters shared with us help us understand what they need to hear from candidates to believe that their vote matters, that elections have consequences for their lives. At the same time, we're continuing to host phone banks with Powered by People volunteers to call more Laredo voters to ensure we have the fullest possible picture.

Thank you for supporting this work by making a donation of $10. Powered by People donors like you ensure we have the resources to do organizing, voter registration and voter contact work year-round (and not just in election years!).

Contribute $10

If we make the most of these conversations and the information that voters shared with us this weekend and on our phone banks, we could make a difference in how statewide Democratic candidates do in these communities in future elections.

What if we could help move turnout by 3%? Or even 5%? What if we were able to help do that not only in Laredo, but in other similar communities that represent a tenth of the state's population?

These border counties could very well decide the future of Texas.

Virtual volunteer opportunity for Jason

Join Beto tomorrow as we call Democrats in Webb County to connect with voters and learn what's most important to them.

Powered By People

Jason, are you free tomorrow? We could really use your help at our virtual phone bank.

Sign up here to join Beto and fellow volunteers tomorrow evening as we connect with previously identified Democrats in Webb County to check in about the issues most important to them.

Here's why it's important we have these conversations during a political off-year, Jason: People want to know that voting matters.

They need to know that it can make a difference before allowing themselves to have faith in the process of voting and participating in an election.

And having these conversations now (and not in the weeks just before an election) shows our commitment to work with each other even when there's not an election on the line.

Can you join Beto, Jason? If you're a conversational Spanish speaker, we'd love for you to attend!

Here's how to help fight voter suppression

As Beto likes to say, nothing beats talking to voters directly.

Powered By People

Jason,

This week, HB 6, an egregious voter suppression bill, took a huge step toward becoming law in Texas.

This bill along with SB 7 – which passed the State Senate last week – constitutes the greatest attack on voting rights in Texas in nearly a decade. These bills won't just make it harder to vote, they will disenfranchise working Texans and communities of color.

That's where you come in, Jason. The antidote to voter suppression is voter engagement, and as Beto likes to say, nothing beats talking to voters directly.

That's why Powered by People is hosting a phone bank next Tuesday, April 13th, to call previously identified Democrats in Webb County to check in about the issues most important to them.

Can you join Beto, Jason? If you're a conversational Spanish speaker, we'd love for you to attend!

Calls like these are how we make progress. Winning in Texas will take an army of grassroots volunteers connecting with millions of voters, but I can personally attest that every single call we make brings us one step closer to flipping Texas blue in 2022 and beyond.

Please, we need to stand up for democracy at its time of greatest need.

Will you join Powered by People volunteers and Beto to make calls next Tuesday?

re: volunteer opportunities

Powered by People volunteers are making real change to support voting rights and move Texas forward.

Powered By People

Jason,

In 2020, more than 20,000 Powered by People volunteers texted and called over 76 million voters and helped register nearly 200,000 likely-Democrat Texas voters leading to record turnout.

Now, we're getting ready to do even more this year, and we need to make sure you're in!

Complete this short interest form to let us know how you'd like to take part in this transformational change happening across Texas.

In just the first few months of 2021, we've already launched vaccination canvasses in 17 Texas cities, supported communities hit hardest by the winter storms, and continued our critical work to register Texans to vote.

Powered by People volunteers are making real change to support voting rights and move Texas forward. If you're ready to join this fight, fill out our volunteer form and help us flip Texas blue.

Looking for volunteers

We're looking at expanding our volunteer network – are you interested?

Powered By People

We're looking to expand our volunteer roster, Jason. Are you in?

Fill out this short form to let us know how you're willing to volunteer to help flip Texas blue in 2022 and beyond.

Whether you can join us as a regular door-knocker or a Spanish-speaker who will help us connect with all residents of Texas, we want you on our team, Jason!

On Thursday, the Texas Senate passed a voter suppression bill targeting working Texans and communities of color. And when added to voter suppression bills in Georgia and 41 other states, this makes Texas part of the single largest coordinated attack on democracy in America since 1965.

We need all hands on deck if we're going to fight back against this rampant voter suppression. Can you fill out our volunteer form and commit to doing all you can to help us flip Texas blue?
