A message of thanks and a call to action

Powered By People

Happy early Thanksgiving, Jason!

We know that this is yet another holiday without hugs and meals shared with friends and family, but we wanted to take a moment to thank you for sticking with us throughout this tumultuous year.

We are so grateful for our amazing community of volunteers, grassroots donors, and supporters across the country. Because of you and your work, we broke records in voter turnout and outreach, made flipping Texas within reach, and elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House. The outcomes of your work make us optimistic for the future of our country.

Thank you for being a part of that, Jason.

However, despite our gratitude and optimism for the future, we cannot ignore what's happening in our country today. COVID-19 is at a new peak. Working families and small businesses are hurting once again. And the stories coming out of El Paso are absolutely devastating.

We cannot change the deadly mistakes of the Trump administration, but we can help our neighbors and do the hard work that our current administration won't do. If you can afford it right now, can you split a donation between 20 Texas food banks to help our neighbors?

Contribute $10

Thank you again, Jason. We hope you have a restful and safe holiday.

Help El Paso with Operation HOPE

Dear Jason,

So many of you have reached out to me to ask how you can help El Paso in the midst of one of the worst Covid outbreaks in the country.

As you may have read, so many are dying in El Paso right now that the county has been forced to set up ten mobile morgues. Hospitals are at capacity, and hundreds of healthcare workers have come to El Paso to help on a temporary basis.

The easiest and perhaps best thing we can do for those who are at risk and for the healthcare workers charged with these tough jobs right now is to wear a mask whenever we are out of our homes, to stay at home if we can, and to continue to follow the best public health guidance.

But for those who want to help ease the burden on families who have recently lost a loved one, there is an organization called Operation HOPE which is helping to cover the costs of funerals and burials for El Paso families who otherwise would not be able to afford them. In a city that is losing dozens of people per day, and is quickly approaching more than a thousand dead, this is a need that is not being met by local, state or federal governments.

If you'd like to give to Operation HOPE or if you'd like to find out more information about them, please click here.

Thank you for your concern and your generosity.

Beto

Can you split a donation between Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock’s campaign today to help them win their seats and flip the Senate?

Flipping the U.S. Senate is vital to helping the Biden-Harris administration.

Powered By People

Jason,

Last week, Beto sent you an important email about everything we've learned post-election. At the very top of that email, he briefly mentioned how important the two U.S. Senate races in Georgia are, with a quick ask to join him and Amy in making a donation to Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock's campaigns.

From just that mention, Powered by People supporters donated thousands to these two campaigns! We were absolutely blown away at how enthusiastically y'all were willing to jump right back into another election. But we weren't surprised – flipping the Senate is absolutely vital if the Biden-Harris administration is going to be effective in their efforts to support working families.

But just like Beto said in that same email, we have to put in the work and keep the faith. And we can only do that with your help, Jason. Can you help us raise more for the Ossoff and Warnock campaigns to help them flip the Senate by splitting a donation today?

Contribute $10

After mobilizing and organizing in Texas for the past year, we understand the uphill battle these campaigns are facing. Voter suppression runs rampant in Georgia, with bad-faith actors spreading disinformation and GOP officials removing thousands of voters from the voter rolls.

But we have faith, thanks to folks like you who stepped up to throw your support behind these two great candidates. And with your help, they will break ahead and sprint through the finish line in January.

There are less than 50 days until the Georgia run-off elections. Can you split a donation of $10 between these critical Georgia campaigns and our grassroots movement today?

Thanks again, y'all.

Georgia needs our help

I have spent the last week calling around the state to listen to voters, candidates and organizers. Here's what I heard:

Dear Jason,

I'm grateful for the responses to the "down but not out!" email I sent last week. General consensus from everyone so far: Tuesday was tough, but Saturday was a great day for the country. Things now seem more hopeful, lighter, more possible. And glad to hear from so many of you that you're in for the distance.

You're keeping the faith, a faith grounded in action.

Speaking of which, and before we take a closer look at what happened in Texas, Georgia needs our help. Amy and I donated to both the Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock campaigns this week. They are our best chances at winning a Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate (which, among other things, will determine how effective a Biden administration can be). If you haven't pitched in yet, please do so at these two links:

And if you'd like to volunteer, the New Georgia Project is registering Georgia voters ahead of the December 7th registration deadline for these Senate runoff elections. You can sign up here.

Back to Texas.

I have spent the last week calling around the state to listen to voters, candidates and organizers. There are many more calls to make, but a few things are coming into focus.

First, we should remember that we protected 11 of the 12 State House seats that we won in 2018. Those were historically Republican districts, and it was no small feat to stave off the millions of dollars spent to retake them. Likewise for our two congressional pickups from 2018. Colin Allred and Lizzie Fletcher are both returning to the U.S. House. We also saw Joe Biden improve nearly 4 points over Hillary Clinton's performance from 2016. That was the best showing by a Democratic nominee in Texas in 24 years.

However, we lost every challenger Congressional race and every challenger State House race except for one. And we didn't come nearly close enough to winning statewide — Presidential, Senate or otherwise. It's important that we understand why, so that we can do much better next time.

Some thoughts based on conversations from this week:

The asymmetrical advantage that Trump and the GOP had this cycle in Texas is far more powerful than many of us understood. And I think it begins to explain Republicans' incredible performance on Tuesday night.

The ability to campaign free of the truth (examples abound, especially along the border, of social media and texting campaigns that trafficked in lies and scare tactics); a far more compelling economic message (not an honest one or better in terms of policy, but simpler, more emotional and more compelling); a willingness to knock on doors and hold in-person events through the duration of the pandemic (when almost no Democrat did the same); the ability to use dominance in government (Republicans hold every statewide office) to maximize voter suppression and raise and deploy massive campaign donations across the state; and the power of the national race to produce record turnout without having the Democratic ticket make a meaningful investment in Texas, were all factors that contributed to GOP and Trump success in our state.

The fact that the border, from the Rio Grande Valley to El Paso, has been ignored for years by the national party, and even many statewide Democratic candidates, hurt us badly. The failure to invest in year-round canvassing — so that voters don't just hear from us during an election — also made it harder for us to move voters at the end. Coupled with the effective disinformation campaign conducted via text and social media by the GOP and the very dire economic circumstances that made people more receptive to the direct economic message of the GOP (Biden will kill your oil and gas jobs; Trump will save them. Biden will close down the economy; Trump will reopen it. Etc.), this begins to explain Trump's phenomenal performance in Texas border counties, counties that happen to be 85% to 95% Mexican-American.

Some lessons that should inform future work that I take from all of this (with the understanding that we still don't have a final, clear picture on the Texas election, and that there are many more people to whom we must reach out and listen):

  • Nothing beats meeting your voters, eyeball to eyeball. We should always find a way to canvass directly at the voter's door. There is a safe way to do this, even in a pandemic.
  • We should be talking to voters year-round. Not just the quick hits to determine partisanship or gain a commitment to vote or to turn someone out to vote. We should be having open-ended conversations with voters about what is important to them, to us, throughout the year, every year. Organizations like the Texas Organizing Project (TOP) have been doing this and have been winning races in places like Harris County. We should learn from them.
  • The central messaging that many Democratic candidates felt obligated to adopt (because they believed that funding and other support from Democratic organizations was contingent on it) doesn't work. If you're running for office you should know why, and you should be able to articulate that. You should also be constantly talking to and listening to the people in your district to understand their needs, concerns, hopes and dreams. Understand why your victory would be their victory. If your "why" and their "why" are not reflected in your own words, that you came up with yourself, then you're not going to connect with voters. People are smart. They smell a focus group-tested message, talking points derived from polls, a campaign driven by consultants, from a mile away.
  • We have to be far more effective on digital and social media. The anecdotal takeaway from those I've listened to, especially in border communities, is that Trump/GOP had a ferocious game (lies and powerful memes, effective targeting of new and young voters) and we had none.
  • We've got to show up everywhere, be there for everyone — especially the places that are hard to get to. Especially for those whose votes have been taken for granted in the past. El Paso, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Laredo, Roma, Edinburg, McAllen, Brownsville. "So what if Trump is a bad guy, what are you bringing to the table?"
  • And we can't write anyone off. Those courageous candidates who ran in East Texas. Those organizers who are still at it in the Panhandle. Those voters who want someone whose going to fight for them in the Permian Basin, we've got to show up for them too. We aren't going to win many of those districts next cycle, but we'll NEVER win them if we don't start showing up and investing now.

None of this is easy. But it's doable if we decide that we're willing to put in the work, if we're willing to believe in ourselves and act our faith.

Thanks again for being part of this effort. Grateful to be doing this with you.

Beto

The results and the work ahead

Jason,

I am deeply disappointed that we did not win in Texas.

Despite record turnout and an extraordinary effort on the part of our volunteers, Texas voters chose Donald Trump and Republican incumbents at nearly every place on the ballot.

For whatever it's worth, it looks to be part of a larger, national trend. No matter the devastation wrought by this administration — hundreds of thousands dead from Covid and tens of millions out of work — our fellow Americans in state after state have voted to reduce the Democrats' majority in the U.S. House, to keep control of the Senate in Republican hands and to deliver an uncomfortably close Presidential race.

As we continue to follow the national results, I wanted to leave you with a look at the work we've accomplished this year. It may offer only cold comfort in the wake of these losses, but these achievements are worth keeping in mind as we begin to think about the work that lies ahead.

Over the course of this year Powered by People's volunteers and supporters like you are responsible for the following:

  • We made over 76 million contact attempts to Texas voters (57.8 million texts and 18.3 million calls);
  • We helped register nearly 200,000 likely-Democrat Texas voters;
  • During the beginning of the pandemic, before the CARES Act was passed by Congress, we filled over 17,000 food bank shift hours across Texas;
  • We brought in more than 10,000 volunteers to call, text or knock on the doors of Texas voters;
  • We helped raise $2,034,165 for Democratic candidates and organizers in Texas (in addition to what we raised to run Powered by People);

And this one doesn't have a measurable number to it, but I know it to be true: we gave it our best and we gave it our all.

I can't help but imagine what we could have done if we were not restrained by the pandemic from knocking on doors and meeting voters at their homes, in their communities, across the state.

We've built a powerful grassroots volunteer organization and I'm hopeful that what we've learned this past year can be put to use in winning elections in future years. Remember, this state last voted for the Democratic nominee in 1976; last sent a Democrat to the Senate in 1988; last elected any Democrat statewide in 1994. We're bound to get knocked down a few times (maybe a lot of times) before we finally win. The question for you, for me, for all of us, is: are you willing to get up again?

As awful as the Texas results are, as hard as it is right now, we must move forward and try again. Because, what's the alternative? Can you accept conceding the future of this state to permanent GOP and Trumpist control? There's much to learn from this election. Many people to whom we must humbly listen, to better understand what's happened and what we can do better. But let's commit ourselves now to doing whatever it takes when we get back up and get back after it.

I was watching the returns last night, and, exhausted from the day and dispirited from the results, I walked upstairs early, got in bed and passed out for 9 hours. I haven't slept more than 5 hours straight in months. But I think my body and my mind knew that it was over, we'd done all we could, we pushed as hard we knew how, we left it all on the field and it was time to acknowledge there was no more that could be done for this election.

Now, like you, I'm watching the remaining states declare their winners for President as we approach a clear victor in the Electoral College. I remain ready to do whatever I can in the coming days for our democracy.

But for now, I am overcome by my deep gratitude for you and this team. I can't tell you how inspired I am by all who contributed to the work, knowing the sacrifice entailed and the willing suspension of cynicism and fatigue that is required to believe in Texas. It leaves me feeling hopeful still, and only strengthens my dedication to Texas, to this team and to the work of helping this state fulfill its potential and promise. I hope to once again have the chance to do that work with you.

With love and gratitude,

Beto

A simple message going into tomorrow:

I'd like to share some final thoughts before tomorrow.

Powered By People

Jason, I wanted to send one last email before the polls open tomorrow morning.

It's been an incredible past few months. Since January, we've registered nearly 200,000 voters and have made more than 60 million voter contact attempts. Yesterday alone we made another 2.6 million calls.

This is what democracy looks like.

You can feel the energy here in Texas. There is a movement that has been building for a while, and I think we're about to see just how strong it is tomorrow night. It's exciting, but our work isn't over yet.

In these final hours, your help is needed now more than ever. There are still thousands of voters who haven't cast their ballots, and who you can help through this process. Help us reach them, Jason:

None of this would be possible without grassroots supporters and volunteers, like you. I know everyone says it, but it's true. Beto and our team were on all those phone banks, too, but we alone could not make those millions of calls and send those millions of texts without our amazing volunteers.

No matter how tomorrow goes (although we all, obviously, want it to go a certain way), I am so proud of this team and what we've been able to accomplish.

It's now or never, Jason. Let's finish strong through this last mile.

Big update from Harris County:

Judges rules that the 127,000 already-cast votes from Harris County WILL be counted tomorrow!

Powered By People

Huge update, Jason:

A federal judge has dismissed the case from conservative Texas donors about throwing out 127,000 early-vote ballots in Harris County. This means those votes will be counted tomorrow!

This is a big deal, even though those ballots never should have been challenged in the first place. But the fact that they were challenged means something: Republicans are scared of losing Texas.

Flipping Texas is within reach – we just have to turn out the voters. Can you make calls with Beto and our special guests tomorrow to turn out Texans before the polls close?

No matter your experience or where you are located, we need you now. Please sign up for one or as many shifts as you can from tomorrow's phone banks:

The other side is fighting nasty, challenging ballots and spreading misinformation. But we're not going to get wrapped up in those fights. Remember, they wouldn't be doing all of this if Texas wasn't within reach. We must keep our heads down, get the work done, and turn out as many voters as possible tomorrow.

We've accomplished amazing things so far – let's keep it up in these last few hours.
