Running a winning campaign isn't cheap. From hiring staff to paying for TV ads, it can cost several thousand to millions of dollars to run and win.
The reality is that most young people don't have the personal resources to self-fund a campaign or a wealthy network of donors to tap into to help pay for campaign expenses.
Even the costs of running for local office are often too out of reach for young people — especially in states where state-level legislators get paid very little, or nothing at all, for their work. How is the average person, especially a younger person, supposed to take a job that costs money to get it, and pays nothing in return?
Jason, young people are priced out of running for office. It's no wonder that despite making up 45% of the electorate, Gen Z and Millenials only hold 21% of State Legislature seats.
