The neo-Nazi "Unite The Right" rally that killed Heather Heyer and injured dozens of others happened seven years ago this week in Charlottesville, VA.
But despite the violence and the disgusting scenes of neo-Nazis with tiki torches marching through the street, most Republicans still haven't reckoned with what Donald Trump's embrace of far-right white supremacists means for their party:
Joe Biden was right when he said the 2020 election was a battle for the soul of the nation. Only that battle isn't over yet — we're still in a battle over what kind of future we'll have as a country.

But despite what we saw in Charlottesville, I truly couldn't be more optimistic right now. President Biden's decision to pass the torch to a new generation and endorse Kamala Harris — AND her selection of Tim Walz as her running mate — has re-energized voters like no one thought possible just one month ago.
Trump's lead is slipping in the polls, and massive crowds are filling stadiums across the country to hear VP Harris and Governor Walz speak.
Again, despite what we saw in Charlottesville, it's clear to me that America is still fundamentally a nation that rejects hatred, bigotry, and wannabe dictators like Trump.
Now it's our job to carry that spirit forward and keep the momentum going through Election Day and beyond. Because it doesn't matter how many more stadiums we fill up or how many more polls Kamala leads in — the only poll that matters is the one that happens on November 5th.
Leaders We Deserve is working around the clock to elect young leaders all over the country who reflect the best of America, and who loudly and clearly reject the kind of violence, hatred, and division we saw in Charlottesville.
