I signed a bill this week requiring every California school district, charter school and county office of education to adopt a policy limiting or prohibiting the use of smartphones by July 1, 2026.
This new law will help students focus on academics, social development, and the world in front of them, not their screens, when they're in school.
The truth is, a majority of high school teachers and a high percentage of middle school teachers say that cell phones in classrooms are a major distraction.
We also know that excessive smartphone use increases anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
So we took action.
I know this is a divisive issue for some, but for us in California, I felt it was urgent to provide reasonable guidelines for smartphone use in school. And let me add, as part of this law, educators must allow students to use their phones in case of an emergency.
