Jason, I'm Anderson Clayton, the Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. I wanted to take a moment to explain what's happening in North Carolina right now and what you can do to help: In my state, there's a case moving through the judicial system that threatens not just one election but the integrity of our entire democratic system. Judge Jefferson Griffin lost his seat to North Carolina Justice Allison Riggs by 734 votes last November. And rather than concede, Griffin, backed by the Republican Party, has filed sweeping legal challenges attempting to discard tens of thousands of ballots. Last week, six months after Election Day, the Republican majority on the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled that over 65,000 voters whose ballots were already counted face having those ballots being thrown out unless they prove their eligibility. Ultimately, this decision will be appealed to our state's Supreme Court. But here's the thing: because we knew this would be a conflict of interest, Justice Allison Riggs has recused herself, making the makeup of the Supreme Court a 5-1 Republican advantage. We don't know how these justices will rule, but we are prepared to continue this battle in federal court if it doesn't go the way of democracy. This is the unprecedented fight that we are in right now, and it's a test case for the right-wing playbook: If you can't win the election, challenge the voters. Manufacture a list, create confusion, and let partisan courts do the rest. We will not allow this to become the new normal in our state. We will make sure we fight this on the ground, in the legislature, in the courts, and also at the ballot box next November.
