Back in 1974, in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and President Nixon's resignation, an unprecedented wave of young Democrats swept into Congress. They were called the Watergate Babies — first‑time elected leaders who helped reshape how Washington worked.
The Watergate babies broke the grip of entrenched power structures in the House, challenged the seniority system that protected the status quo, and pushed for transparency and accountability. And they made real progress.
They fought to clean up the corruption that had become too normal (think: the opaque campaign cash, the back‑room deals, hundred-dollar bills in brown paper bags) and helped usher in reforms that gave power back to the people. One of the landmark outcomes of that era was the overhaul of campaign finance law in 1974, putting real limits and enforcement mechanisms in place through the Federal Election Commission so we could finally know who was buying influence in our politics and which special interests were buying out our politicians.
But that fight isn't finished. And today, we face a new moment of corruption and chaos — from the corruption normalized by Trump and the MAGA movement to lawmakers who let corporate bribes dictate their decisions.
America is due for another wave of Watergate babies who are ready to clean up the mess that Trump and the MAGA movement will inevitably leave behind.
