Last night, Donald Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which was passed nearly unanimously by both chambers of Congress this week (only one House Republican member voted against it).
This kind of clear, bipartisan action is exceedingly rare in today's politics. But when it came to pushing for accountability for Jeffrey Epstein and transparency for his survivors, Congressional Republicans ultimately joined Democrats and got it right.
Now do healthcare.
I mean, seriously — Republicans in Congress ought to step up and do their constitutional duty on more than just Epstein. Congress is a co-equal branch of our federal government, along with the President and the judiciary, and yet Republicans have been relinquishing that power and letting Trump run roughshod over congressional authority since the moment he took office.
It's why so many of my 46 lawsuits against Trump (yes, 46 lawsuits in 43 weeks — the guy breaks the law a lot) center on how he's overstepping his authority, and it's why these lawsuits are necessary to restore that balance of power. Because Congressional Republicans don't have the backbone to stand up to Trump most of the time.
This week we saw what can happen when public pressure pushes Republicans in Congress to defy Trump and join Democrats in working on behalf of the American people.
That kind of action was clearly necessary in this case — Epstein's survivors deserved nothing less than a unified front from our leaders. But it shouldn't be exclusive to cases of egregious, horrific criminality.
Californians and Americans deserve the same meaningful action when it comes to their healthcare. Their right to vote. Their reproductive freedom. Their children's education.
