There's a saying in fundraising: early money is like yeast, it makes the dough rise.
It's true–raising money early on in your campaign is key to later success, and will encourage others to join the team. I've learned this about fundraising after winning three competitive House races. But I can really appreciate this metaphor as a mom of three on a budget who does quite a bit of baking from scratch.
Included in the recipes we'll share are a few of the meals I leave for my kids before I head to D.C. for a week of votes and hearings. My children want their mom's cooking, even when I'm across the country, so I do some aggressive meal prepping. The recipes I'll send you are all approved by Betsy, Luke, and Paul, and I hope you'll like them too!

Until just a few days after the election of Donald Trump in 2016, I had never considered running for office. But like so many Americans, and women in particular, his election sparked something in me. It wasn't good enough to sit on the sidelines anymore. Not long after, I decided to run for Congress to challenge the Republican incumbent who represented my Orange County district.
Thanks to the support of people like you, I won that competitive race and headed to Washington in January of 2019. My top priority has always been accountability for those in power—whether that's accountability for Ben Carson, Wall Street CEOs, or Donald Trump.
A lot has happened since my longshot run in 2018, but I'm still a minivan-driving mom from Irvine who has the courage to stand up to powerful special interests and deliver for working people.

I've been told I'm an underdog in this race, and when I hear that I look around the room…because I don't think of myself as an underdog. And I'm not, because I have all of you on our team.
But I'm not naive to the challenges this race presents. Polling has us just two points behind another candidate, a small and certainly not insurmountable gap.
A bright spot in that poll is the fact that I'm leading the county I represent in Congress by nine points. When I'm able to introduce myself to voters, we gain a clear advantage. That's why I'm asking for your support to help us ramp up our campaign and get our message out there.

I don't "do Congress" like most people do. I was the only Democrat in the House to oppose "earmarks," a way of funding Members' pet projects. I'm leading the fight to ban congressional stock trading, and I'm one of just eleven Members of Congress who doesn't take checks from lobbyists.
My life looks different than most of my colleagues: I'm the only single mom of school aged kids serving in the House, and I'd be the only one in the Senate.

As a former professor, I know when people are stalling because they don't have the answer to a question. So when witnesses do this during congressional hearings, there's a phrase I love to use: reclaiming my time.

The end of the first quarter means that federal election laws require us to show our receipts and report how much money we've raised since launching our campaign. A strong performance will show super PACs the strength of our movement and dissuade them from boosting our opponents.
