Friends,
Since 2024, California has become safer from gun violence than any other time on record — proving that a comprehensive, data-driven approach can transform public safety.
But now, we find ourselves at a dangerous crossroads. While we are working towards a solution, the Trump administration is running from its responsibility to do the same — gutting investments in violence prevention, law enforcement, and victim care.
That’s why I’m proud to announce that this week, we released the final part of our strategic plan to sustain California’s record against gun violence.
This report includes more than 70 recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders across the state to strengthen investments and unite multiple systems around a coordinated plan for prevention, protection, and accountability.
While the Trump administration guts gun violence prevention funding, we are building an effective blueprint for public safety.
Our progress has been transformational.
As recently as 2010, a child under 18 was more likely to die from bullet wounds in California than in the rest of the U.S. on average. By 2024, that trend had reversed, and a child in California was less likely to die from bullet wounds than a child elsewhere.
This progress was not an accident. It was the result of a sustained commitment to gun violence prevention policies and investments.
