I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that's been weighing heavily on my mind: California's wildfires.
Recently, the Corral Fire in San Joaquin County came within a mile of my house - we could see and smell the smoke. It was very scary. The fire ended up burning over 14,000 acres and our fire departments were stretched incredibly thin.
I wish I could say this was the first time wildfires threatened my community. But unfortunately here in California, wildfire season has turned into a year-round threat. And it's only getting worse. This year wildfires are spreading faster and burning longer. In fact, fires are burning 4x more land this year compared to last.
I'm deeply concerned.
That's why I fought and won a pay increase for our wildland firefighters. And it's why I just introduced our landmark bill: the Modernizing Wildfire Safety and Prevention Act. This first-in-its-kind bill will revolutionize how we fight and prevent wildfires. It enhances firefighter training, updates technology to better predict wildfires, and gets our fire services the tools and services they need to get fires under control quickly.
I truly believe in this bill. And I hope you'll consider adding your name as a citizen co-sponsor. We need to show DC that this issue matters! Here's the link: https://secure.ngpvan.com/sign
We've got a tough road ahead, but I believe climate change is an existential crisis. We have to keep pushing and actually fight back!
