With Trump heading to the White House, states like California just became pivotal in the fights for reproductive freedom, climate justice, and more.
We haven't forgotten Trump's first term. Elected officials at the state and local levels need to be ready from Day One to respond if and when Trump follows through on his threats against our families.
You can expect that…
→ State leaders will be a check on the president, calling out his extreme behavior and challenging his administration's extremism in the courts.
→ As the federal government fails to defend our freedoms, state and local legislatures will step up to codify protections for abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and more.
→ While there are distractions and dysfunction in Washington, blue states will show Americans an alternative where the government focuses on solving families' biggest challenges, especially the cost of living and housing.
Part of turning our anger into action right now means looking away from Washington. Yes, we need to keep an eye on the nonsense that comes out of the Oval Office. But, we've also got to build up our state and local benches, in California and elsewhere, to form our strongest defense against Trump.
State and local races may not always garner national attention, but these elected officials can improve folks' day-to-day lives and empower our communities—especially now, when they will act as bulwarks against an extreme presidency.
Thanks,
Katie Porter
