Hey, y’all! Happy April. WARNING: This is a food-centric post, so apologies in advance for making your stomach rumble. 😂 Over the past few months, I’ve been traveling across the district, meeting the people and visiting the places that make our community so special. I wanted to take a minute to highlight just a few of them today. I stopped by the Holy Rollie Pastry Shop, founded by Kimberly and Phillip Matthews in 2020. They started baking at home during the pandemic, testing their concepts at farmers’ markets and selling their pastries online. In April 2023, they opened the doors to their brick-and-mortar shop in Irving, Texas. Along with baking some delicious cinnamon rolls, I talked to them about all of the hard work involved with running a small business – long hours, rising costs, and building a sense of community. I had a great time with Our Giving Kitchen Dallas, a grassroots organization that makes a real difference for our neighbors by preparing homemade meals for shelters and families in need. Alongside Councilmember John Bowers, I rolled up my sleeves to make hamantaschen, a traditional Jewish pastry, for some seniors in our community. I admire all of the work that OGK Dallas is doing, and I was grateful to be part of it. I worked a shift at Henderson Chicken, a Black-owned small business owned by Linda Henderson – known as “The Queen of Fried Chicken” – that’s been serving the Dallas community for generations. We talked about how the price of chicken has gone up and how building community is a top priority for her. I love the opportunity to visit with – and stand alongside – the folks in Dallas, whether it’s in the kitchen, behind the counter, or anywhere else in the community. I’m honored when people share their stories with me – they impact the issues I’m focusing on in this campaign. While I wish I could sit down with every member of this grassroots team and have a one-on-one conversation, I know that’s not possible. So today, I’m hoping you’ll take my campaign priorities survey and let me know what’s top of mind for you and your family. Thank you, Colin
