My thoughts on Trump’s immunity

The Supreme Court made a horrifying decision.

Jason,

I'm sure you've seen by now that the Supreme Court released a major ruling yesterday about Donald Trump's immunity from prosecution. It was a horrifying decision.

The six conservative Justices ruled that Presidents have "total immunity" from prosecution for "official" acts. I'm not a legal scholar, but there is no world where our Founding Fathers would have wanted this.

This is a complete distortion of our Constitution and given Trump's recent felony convictions, couldn't come at a worse time. This man clearly has no regard for the law or democratic values and now the Supreme Court has told him there will be no consequences. I'm almost at a loss for words at how terrible this is.

Justice Sotomayor's blazing dissent said it best:

"Never in the history of our Republic has a President had reason to believe that he would be immune from criminal prosecution if he used the trappings of his office to violate the criminal law. Moving forward, however, all former Presidents will be cloaked in such immunity … With fear for our democracy, I dissent."

I know there's a lot of talk right now about the best way to fight back. We can't change the Justices' minds, but we can make sure we win back the House and try to combat this legislatively.

One of the ways we fight back is by electing Democrats in swing seats like mine who are brave enough to call this out. So will you pitch in now to help us fight back and protect our democracy against Donald Trump?

This is an incredibly scary moment for our country.

- Josh
