Today is the 7-year anniversary of Donald Trump reversing decades of progress by BANNING transgender people from serving in the military.
Back then, there wasn't a single transgender member of Congress to stand up to Trump… there still isn't, Jason. Which is why Leaders We Deserve has endorsed Sarah McBride in her race to represent Delaware in the U.S. House.
Sarah would be the FIRST-ever transgender member of Congress — after already being the first openly transgender person elected to a state senate seat. It is CRITICAL that we have her voice not just at the table but at the head of the table, as Republicans launch nonstop attacks on the trans community.
Listen, I know as a supporter of Leaders We Deserve that I don't have to tell you representation matters. You're here because you KNOW it does.
So I won't explain why it's so important to end the absence of transgender people at the table in Congress. Instead, I'm going to tell you why Sarah is so damn amazing.
She's been a political badass for years. Sarah worked for the late Attorney General Beau Biden and served in the Obama-Biden White House. She also served as the national spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBTQ equal rights organization. In 2016, she became the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention when she spoke at the Democratic convention. And in 2020, she made history when she was elected to the Delaware State Senate.
She's fought for progressive values as a state senator. In her first term, Sarah passed paid family and medical leave for workers in Delaware — the largest expansion of the state's social safety net in decades. She's also successfully passed bills expanding access to health care, requiring mental health and media literacy education in public schools, promoting green technologies, and preventing lead poisoning in young people.
She leads with love. When Republicans went after transgender kids in her state, Sarah declared boldly, "To the trans young people and their families who are watching today… your government sees you. And for the first time ever, really understands you. You are loved, and you are worthy. You are part of the vibrant diversity that makes this state great."
