When I decided to run for Senate again – I knew that I wanted to run a different kind of campaign – one focused on making sure I wasn’t waiting for voters to come to me. I thought about the voters I would need to reach and how I could best reach them – and a lot of the time it got me thinking about my mom. She couldn’t make it to a political rally like most candidates host. She was teaching during the day, tutoring at nights, and raising me on her own. It might not be the exact same scenario, but most families today are in a similar position: They don’t have three hours to spare on a weeknight. That’s why I’m going directly to Texans: where they work, where they shop, where they pray, where they watch their kids play sports – and even where they get their hair cut.
Would you be surprised to hear some of the best conversations I’ve had are over a shave at the barber shop? Barbershops are one of the few places where you’ll hear every perspective under the sun – and you learn pretty quickly what’s really on people’s minds. For a lot of folks these days, it’s the cost of groceries, housing, and health care. Texans are working harder than ever with less to show for it. Young people aren’t buying homes the way their parents did, and it’s not because they don’t want to. It’s because home ownership is out of reach for too many. It doesn’t have to be this way. In the Senate, I will fight for tax credits for first-time homebuyers, expand affordable housing, and add more protections for renters to make housing more affordable. I’ll work to bring good-paying jobs to Texas and protect affordable health care. And I’ll fight for a future where every kid and family has a chance to succeed. I’m grateful for spaces like barber shops and for the conversations that keep me grounded in why I’m running: to make life better for working Texans. That’s why I’m going to keep having these important conversations with folks all over Texas, even – and especially – when they’re difficult. If you don’t know this about me yet, I’m someone who doesn’t run from a challenge or back down from a tough fight. I’m incredibly proud of the campaign we’re building together and that we’re doing it the right way – without taking shady donations from corporate PACs trying to buy influence in Washington. Because unlike my GOP opponents in this race, I believe politicians should serve the people they represent, not CEOs and lobbyists. And it’s working! With multiple polls showing this race statistically tied and some even showing me in the lead against the GOP frontrunner and MAGA loyalist, Ken Paxton, we’ve got a real chance to bring much-needed change to Texas. But we can’t take our foot off the gas for even a second (literally – my plan is to keep driving all over the state from now until Election Day). If you believe in this movement, if you’re ready for new leadership in Washington, and if you have a few bucks to spare today, I hope you’ll chip in anything at all to help me keep having meaningful conversations with folks across Texas.
