Jason -
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King loved America.
Dr. King loved our country so much that he dedicated his life — and in the end it was taken — in a fight for our nation's highest ideal: freedom.
Last week, I visited the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Standing where he once stood, one cannot help but feel the weight of the stakes of what Dr. King confronted.
Hate and fear were weaponized by the powerful to terrorize those they saw as powerless.
But here's the other truth about that time: The people were sick and tired of being sick and tired.
So at lunch counters, on buses, in classrooms, and in the streets, Dr. King and leaders of that moment reminded the people of their power.
They reminded them that it doesn't have to be this way. That the people can change the course of our country and its history.
Isn't that true today, Jason?
Standing on the balcony where Dr. King spent his final moments, I thought about what he would see if he looked at America now. What would he think? What would he say?
I do believe that he would see that, once again, people today are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
When the president is rigging congressional maps to cheat, when he crafted a Court to gut the Voting Rights Act to silence our voices, when he incites distrust in our election infrastructure so people won't vote…
When the federal government rips people out of their cars, out of their homes, and out of their churches… When families are separated and a mother of three is shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis…
When our differences are treated as danger... When neighbors see one another as the enemy…
When social media and misinformation take hold of our lives and the lives of our children…
When rising costs and stagnant wages force working families to choose between rent or medicine, between childcare or groceries, between dignity or survival…
We are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Now I know many people in our country are feeling overwhelmed right now. And people are rightly angry and profoundly frustrated.
A long broken system has fueled cynicism and apathy so that far too many have resigned themselves to thinking, "Well, I guess it's just going to be this way."
But let's pause for a minute to see the echoes of history — not only in the threats we face, but also in the power of the people.
This is a moment not to throw up our hands, but to roll up our sleeves.
I know the people reading this email uniquely understand that the fight requires courage, stamina, and commitment. It requires us to show up even when we are sick and tired.
So let us continue to be clear-eyed. They may want us to be afraid, divided, and silent — but we will not give them that satisfaction. We will continue the fight with determination, resilience, and dare I say — joy.
Today, in Dr. King's memory, and every day.
Thank you and take care,
Kamala
