Fifty-one House members and nine senators have announced they're not running for reelection. That's the most retirements across both chambers this century — and more Republicans are leaving than Democrats.
Some are retiring because of their age. Others want to tend to their families, and some have received death threats.
Yet more than ever, they are leaving because they don't like the workplace.
Congress has become a toxic, frustrating place to work where nothing gets done.
Rep. Jerry Nadler put it perfectly when he announced his decision to retire: "Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party."
