He can’t afford to live in the city he helps keep running — people like him are why our fights matter.

Jason,
A couple weeks ago when I was on the ground with our candidates in New York, I met a 25 year old MTA train mechanic. He spends his work days fixing the subway cars that carry millions of New Yorkers across the city every single day.
He’s also a volunteer for our candidate, Claire Valdez’s campaign. That’s how he chose to spend one of his off days, and it’s how we met.
He grew up in Queens, but he doesn’t live there anymore. He sleeps in Long Island now — because he couldn’t afford $3,000 a month to stay in the neighborhood that raised him.
Honestly, I’ve been thinking about his situation ever since.
Because every policy fight we talk about — rent stabilization, affordable housing, taking on the corporate landlords bleeding working people dry — that MTA train mechanic is the reason those fights matter. This is who our movement is actually for.
When we back young, bold, audacious leaders like Claire who make it their mission to fight for everyone this crooked system keeps leaving behind, we are fueling the fight for a future people can actually afford to live in.
A future where people aren’t priced out of their own communities. A future where the price of healthcare and childcare won’t decimate your budget for the month. A future where wages actually keep pace with the cost of living.
That’s exactly what we're building at Leaders We Deserve with every candidate we back and every race we enter.
Will you pitch in $5 to power our work and help us elect the next generation of bold young leaders?
