Mitch McConnell hasn't cast a vote in the Senate since June 11. He's missed 60 roll call votes — on the defense budget, Iran legislation, and Trump administration nominees. Kentucky's governor has publicly called on him to prove he can still serve, or resign.
Meanwhile, McConnell is still collecting his full Senate paycheck.
He can be missing from his job for months and get paid. But millions of American workers can't take a single week off to care for a newborn or a sick parent without risking their financial security.
That's wrong. And it's time we did something about it.
Here’s my suggestion for Congressional Democrats: introduce national paid sick and parental leave — and call it the MITCH Act.
The Maintaining Income Through Caregiving and Health Act would guarantee that working Americans get the same deal Mitch McConnell gets: the ability to take time away from work when they need it, without losing their paycheck.
If you can be absent from your job for months on end as a U.S. Senator and still collect your full tax-payer funded salary, working parents and caregivers deserve the same.
This isn't complicated. It's about basic fairness. It's about recognizing that workers have families, responsibilities, health issues, and lives outside of their jobs. And it's about holding our elected officials to a standard that reflects the dignity and respect every American deserves.
If McConnell can take a months-long absence and get paid, why can't a new parent take a few weeks off? Why can't someone caring for a sick relative take time off without going broke? Why are working families forced to choose between a paycheck and their health or that of a loved one, while a senator gets both?
Leaders We Deserve is fighting to elect the next generation of leaders who will actually take on fights like this — leaders who won't just talk about fairness, but will introduce bold, creative legislation and hold their colleagues accountable.
We need resources to keep building that movement. To recruit, train, and fund candidates who show up and fight for working families.
