Today is the day, Jason.
Polls are open right now across Massachusetts, and we have a massive opportunity to replace two status quo incumbents with bold, young, genuine progressive fighters who reflect what the people of their districts deserve: Patrick Roath and Daniel Lander.
I have been on the ground knocking doors and the energy could not be better. People are fired up and ready for a better Democratic Party. As I was knocking doors with Patrick, multiple voters told us they had received the mailers Leaders We Deserve sent in support of Patrick (the mailers this movement funded!) and they were ecstatic to have a real shot at finally voting out one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress.
Patrick is taking on 25-year incumbent Stephen Lynch, one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress who has voted with Trump multiple times to support ICE, voted against the Affordable Care Act, and taken over $2 million in corporate cash.
At the state level, Daniel is challenging 20-year incumbent William Brownsberger who has repeatedly killed affordable housing bills, backed regressive tax cuts, and fought against unions.
Brownsberger is seen as such a major obstruction to progress in the State Legislature that both Mayor Michelle Wu and Senator Elizabeth Warren have broken with the status quo to endorse Daniel. Yesterday, just after I got off stage at a rally with Daniel, one of his supporters came up to me. She said she was sorry — she'd initially thought the idea of challenging Democratic incumbents was a waste of time, but because of Daniel, she's come around to seeing the value in doing so. She even asked to re-subscribe to our email list!
On our final primary day, the most important thing I can say to you all is thank you. When we announced that we wouldn't just be taking on Republicans this cycle, but that we’d also be challenging those Democrats who have failed to meet the moment, many people told us it would be the end of Leaders We Deserve and any future work I could have had in politics. But because of you all, the opposite happened.
We have had the grassroots support to back candidates who will do the right thing, even when that means challenging the status quo. With your help, there have been more retirements from Congress this term than any in the past 100 years. A record number of incumbents have been replaced with true progressive fighters. Young voters are now starting to come back to the Democratic Party because they see themselves and their interests represented in the party.
This is our last primary day of the cycle, Jason. I hope that tomorrow morning, I’ll be bringing you good news about their wins — but to make sure we don’t leave anything on the table, we need your support to give Patrick and Daniel a final Election Day push and get them across the finish line.
