Donald Trump just ousted the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and replaced her with a top immigration officer, Kevin McAleenan. This administration shows no signs of slowing down their attacks on immigrants, cloaked in lies that these families of refugees and asylum seekers are a threat to national security.

This moment calls on us to do everything in our power to unite and elect a new president who will stand up for all of us -- those who were born here and those who came here seeking refuge and asylum. A president who will not allow the DHS Secretary to separate families, tear gas kids, put children in desert tent camps, or inflict irreversible damage not only on our fellow human beings but on the conscience of this country.‬

To elect Beto, the most important thing you can do right now is to knock on doors and talk to voters in Venice the weekend of April 13-14, when we're launching our national voter contact program. If you can't make it that weekend, sign up for another canvass here.

Even if you've never knocked on doors before, don't worry. Here's what the canvass will look like: You'll meet other Beto volunteers and get trained to make your conversations effective. You'll start knocking on doors. When someone answers, you'll ask who they're planning to vote for. If they're not sure, you'll ask what issues are important to them and share why you personally support Beto. The real key is listening more than talking. And you'll track all of the data in an app on your phone.

Now more than ever, we need to fight back against the dangerous narratives about immigrants in this country. We should follow our asylum laws, welcome immigrants, ensure everyone is treated with dignity, and share the true story of immigration -- one that values the contributions so many including Dreamers have made to our country. We hope you'll do what you can to help with immediate relief and a rapid response. But we also need you to knock on doors to elect Beto.

This campaign's success will come down to people-talking-to-people. It's the single most effective way to win votes. It's going to be a ton of work, but together we can rise to the challenge and build a new path forward for this country.
