Jason,
Just hours ago, Beto rolled out a historic plan to repair our broken democracy. One of the key pieces? Banning political action committees from bankrolling candidates for elected office.
In 2018, more than one-third of all donations to House candidates came from PACs. And these PACs, many of them run by corporations, have captured so much of our government, raising over $3 billion to peddle influence and elect sympathetic politicians.
It's not enough to just decry the influence of big money (as many Democrats do). We need to walk the talk. Beto has rejected PAC money for five years and counting because he knows how special interests have corrupted and corroded American democracy.
Some of these PACs represent big corporate interests. The pharmaceutical industry, the telecom industry, the energy industry, the insurance industry... you name it! And they're not using that money just to get access, although that's part of it. They're buying outcomes in the form of legislation.
So when you wonder why our democracy is so dysfunctional, why it doesn't represent the interests of the people it purports to serve, all you have to do is follow the money.
- Team Beto
