Taxes are due today for most households across the country, Jason.
The bad news first: in 2023, billionaires in the United States added roughly $1.2 trillion to their personal wealth. Many will only pay between 4 - 8.5% in taxes on those "unrealized capital gains," while the average working family will pay 13.6%.1
But here's some good news: Roughly 69% of Americans across the political spectrum — polled in 7 different swing states2 – support higher taxes on billionaires and people who make more than $400,000 a year.
Since Alexandria's first day on the campaign trail, our movement has demanded that the rich pay their fair share. Looks like more and more working families agree.
Here's some more good news: so far, tax returns in 2024 are averaging $3,011 — up $123 from 2023.3
Recent estimates show that the top 1% were the most significant tax evaders in the country in 2021. Yet the House GOP made it their top priority to claw back 25% of funding allocated to the IRS by Democrats in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Why should single moms and veterans have to pay for giveaways to the rich? It's time for the top 1% and corporations to pay their fair share.
