"Leave No One Behind."
You hear it from me a lot. It's the slogan I ran on, and it's the first thing you see on welcome signs when driving into the great state of Maryland.
The story behind those words started when I joined the Army at 17. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my mentors from military school. I was still a minor, so my mom had to sign the paperwork for me to join.
I enlisted because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my mentors in military school. They had shown me how to be accountable for others and overcome big challenges. When fellow soldiers needed our help, it was never a question of where they're from or what party they vote for. We were all Americans, working toward a shared goal, and you Leave No One Behind.
To me, that's true patriotism. Believing that the people around you — your fellow soldiers, your neighbors, and your community — deserve support now matter what.
It's stuck with me, even years after hanging up my uniform. It's how I work with people across Maryland to make this the best place in the world to change the world. When we're able to embrace each other — just like how I embraced what I learned in military school and in the Army — we can create a future where no one is left behind.
As Maryland's Governor, I promise to fight for that future.
