Last night, Representative Justin J. Pearson won his primary in TN-09 — and this win is so much bigger than just one race.
At Donald Trump’s request, Tennessee’s GOP-controlled legislature redistricted TN-09 back in May, completely dismantling the state’s only majority Black and Democratic-held seat.
That blatant Republican power grab came on the heels of SCOTUS’ decision to gut the remainder of the Voting Rights Act earlier this year — leaving folks in majority-Black Memphis with diluted voting power.
But last night, on the 61st anniversary of the VRA’s passage, Justin got one step closer to Congress anyway.
