Setting the stage for the months ahead

Powered By People

Jason,

We know from experience that grassroots organizing, door-to-door block walking, and direct voter engagement is the best way to bring people into the process.

That's how Beto won long shot races in the past. That's how he won more votes than any Democrat in Texas history in 2018. That's how we just broke the state record for voter turnout in a special election runoff. And that's how we're going to flip Texas in 2020.

We also know that grassroots organizing at such a scale requires a lot of resources. It's not easy work — but it's necessary. And we're up against our first fundraising deadline of the year tonight at midnight. So, we're asking you:

Can you make a donation before our deadline tonight and help us elect candidates in Texas and across the country? What we raise at the start of 2020 will determine the strength of our organizing program in the months to come.

Contribute

For those who just recently started to get involved — or who haven't heard from us yet — Powered by People's mission is to organize grassroots volunteers to do the tough, necessary work that wins elections.

We'll register voters (especially those who are just turning 18), knock on doors, make phone calls, and build the grassroots power necessary to make progress on the issues we all care most about.

If we are successful, we will not only win the important races in 2020, we will also develop the infrastructure to ensure that we have sustainable majorities in Texas and nationwide into the foreseeable future.

If you're able to, please support Powered By People today by making a $3 donation. As the name suggests, our work is funded and fueled by YOU. We know we can't do it alone.

This is a big undertaking, Jason — no question about it. But we've seen first-hand the incredible things we're capable of when we work together.

Let's do this,

Beto wanted to make sure you saw this

Powered By People

Hey Jason, we wanted to make sure you had a chance to see Beto's note about the results of Tuesday's election.

It's important you read it because now is not the time for despair. We have a lot to be proud of, and a lot to look forward to (like Eliz running in the general election in November, along with dozens of other key candidates that Powered By People intends to support). But that work requires resources, and we're facing our first fundraising deadline of the year on January 31st.

So, we're asking: can you please read Beto's note below and then pitch in $3 before midnight tomorrow? Our electoral strength depends on the strength of our grassroots fundraising. We're counting on your support.

Thanks for everything, Jason. We can't wait to continue this work with all of you.

Dear Jason,

Thank you for working so hard to help Eliz Markowitz in her race to represent the people of Fort Bend and the 28th House district in the Texas legislature.

Election night was tough. Not the outcome that we wanted. But we knew from the start that this was a long shot; we knew Eliz had only received 39% of the vote in the November special election; we knew her opponent had lent his own campaign $1.5 million. But we also knew that as the first election of the most important year of our lives we had to try and we had to do our best.

I am confident we did. Together, more than 1,100 of us knocked on over 41,000 doors. And beyond the direct engagement with voters, we had fun, we connected with old friends and had the chance to make new ones. As Thomas from Lubbock put it, we all got to be a family again.

While we didn't win, we helped produce the largest turnout in a runoff special election in Texas history. We helped improve Eliz's performance over the November election by 3 points. And most importantly — the tens of thousands of conversations we had with voters laid the groundwork for her to have a fighting chance in the November matchup for this same seat.

This is just the beginning. Not only does Eliz have another chance to win in less than ten months, we now have the ability to bring Powered by People volunteers to bear on state house elections throughout Texas. I hope you will be one of them.

If we stay focused, if we stay after it, we will achieve our goal of electing a Democratic majority in the state house for the first time since 2001.

Keep up the fight and keep the faith,

Beto

Guess what today is

We have a lot to be proud of, and we've proven that our grassroots-powered model not only works on big Senate races like Beto's in 2018, but on small-scale elections like this one in Fort Bend.

Today is Election Day, Jason, and we don't have a moment to lose. Here's what we need you to do:

Step 1: Join our call team RIGHT NOW and hop on our dialer to make calls for Eliz. It doesn't matter if you're from Fort Bend or Venice — each new volunteer means an additional HUNDRED more voters contacted on average.

Step 2: Reach out to ANY friends of yours in Texas HD 28 and share this page with them to make sure they have a plan to vote!

Step 3: Make an emergency contribution today and continue to fund our GOTV software and voter turnout program.

Step 4: Most importantly, remember that no matter what happens — win or lose — we have a lot to be proud of: 41,000 doors knocked, 1,100 unique volunteers hailing from 155 different cities in 19 different states. That's incredible.

We've proven that our grassroots powered model not only works on big Senate races like Beto's in 2018, but on elections like this one in Fort Bend.

Now let's leave everything out there and bring home a win for Eliz and working families all over Texas!

Read before tomorrow

Tomorrow is the special election in Texas HD 28. We're on the verge of carrying Eliz Markowitz to victory and flipping a critical seat from red to blue.

Jason, we're almost there.

Tomorrow is the special election in Texas HD 28. We're on the verge of helping Eliz Markowitz win and flip a critical seat from red to blue.

That would bring us one step closer to Democratic control of the Texas State House for the first time in decades. However, even with a win tomorrow, we would still need to flip eight more seats to win a majority.

That's where you come in. Thanks to generous supporters like you, we were able to knock on more than 38,000 doors in HD 28 alone (in fact, our grassroots power grew so big that the GOP got scared and started busing in volunteers).

Now, we need to replicate that organizing success in at least eight more districts — which we can only do with support from generous people like you. On the eve of Election Day, will you make a donation to help us hit the ground running and start immediately organizing in all of the districts we need to win?

Donate

Flipping these seats and winning control of the Texas State House would directly impact the lives of almost every single Texan.

Not only would it give us the chance to change those nearly 29 million lives for the better, but turning Texas blue would send a shockwave throughout the political world. It would show how important — and vital — grassroots organizing is to Democratic victory.

All of that is within our grasp. We can make it happen. But for us to win tomorrow — and beyond — we need your help; it's going to take a lot of resources to knock on the hundreds of thousands of doors we'll need to.

We're in the home stretch for HD 28, so let's leave it all on the road. Will you make a gift today to support our work to win this seat, and many more seats to come?

Thank you for everything,

Today, tomorrow, and Monday

Eliz Markowitz' runoff in Texas House District 28 is on Tuesday, and we're really putting the pedal to the metal during this home stretch.

Hi Jason, I'm Dan — an organizer on the Powered By People team.

Eliz Markowitz' runoff in Texas House District 28 is on Tuesday, and we're really putting the pedal to the metal during this home stretch. Hundreds of volunteers are hitting the pavement to talk to (and turn out) voters. But we also need help contacting all the people we've been unable to get a hold of so far.

That's where you come in. Even though you're in California, you have a critical role to play in this election.

That's why I'm asking you to sign up and join our remote call team to make sure in-district voters have a plan for Election Day — and more specifically, a plan to vote for Eliz!

Join the call team >>

This is a monumental race — not just for Texas, but for our country. And the conversations we have with voters in these final few days have the potential to turn the tide for Eliz.

I hope you'll be able to make it this weekend. And if you can't, please consider making a donation to fund our critical voter turnout work in Texas.

Helping Beto out on an important thing

We can win this critical race, but we need more volunteer hours. Beto is assembling a team to get out the vote this weekend.

Jason, we've spent the last two weekends knocking on tens of thousands of doors to get out the vote for Eliz Markowitz in a key special election runoff.

Now early voting has started. We're seeing turnout at FIVE TIMES the rate of early voting in November. Our field strategy is working wonders. In just a few short days, we can pull off a huge upset by electing Eliz and bringing Texas within striking distance of Democratic control.

Why does this one election matter so much? Texas is the largest battleground state in the country. A win for Eliz puts us within an 8-seat margin of flipping the state's legislature from red to blue. It puts six House seats in Democratic contention. It's a special election with national implications.

We can win, but we need more volunteer hours. Beto is assembling a remote volunteer call team to dial voters on our target list over the next 6 days.

Can you click here to join the team now and make some calls to get the job done? Please sign up for our Slack channel so we can keep you in the loop on how to get started.

Join the team >>

Signing up for our Slack channel will get you in touch with our volunteer coordinators who can explain just how easy it is to get started making calls to voters for Eliz.

Even if you don't live in Texas, this is critically important work. Remember, winning Texas in 2020 means we beat Trump handily in the electoral college. Winning the Texas legislature means we can expand Medicaid under Obamacare. It all starts with getting Eliz elected.

So please: sign up for our remote call team Slack channel now and let's get to work winning this extremely close race.

Thank you for all you do,

Powered By People team

PS: If you can't join our remote call team, Beto has asked if you can please chip in $10 to help us fund the software and team necessary to call voters and knock doors in this extremely important special election. Every dollar helps.

This stuff really works!

We've spent the last two weekends knocking on doors in Fort Bend county trying to help Eliz Markowitz win a special election for the state house. If she wins, she'll be the first Democrat to represent the district in the legislature.

Jason,

We've spent the last two weekends knocking on doors in Fort Bend county trying to help Eliz Markowitz win a special election for the state house. If she wins, she'll be the first Democrat to represent the district in the legislature.

But more than that, a victory on January 28th will show Texas and the country that with only 8 more seats to pick up, we are going to win the State House for the first time since 2001. And it will also mean that we are poised to deliver our state's 38 electoral college votes to the Democratic nominee who will defeat Donald Trump.

That's how important this election is. And that's why Powered By People has mobilized more than 950 people to block walk in House District 28 over the last two weekends. They came from Katy and Houston, Austin and Dallas, El Paso and Longview, Lubbock and San Antonio. Some even jumped on a plane to come down from outside of Texas. And so far they've knocked on over 24,000 doors, initiating thousands of conversations with the voters who will decide this important election.

And you know what? I think it's working.

After one day of early voting, we are already breaking records for turnout in a special election. By 7pm Tuesday, 3,579 people had voted at one of the five early voting locations in Fort Bend. By way of comparison, during the first day of early voting last November only 694 people had voted and there were 23 early voting locations!

Gov. Patrick Svitek's Very Good Tweet

That means that in an election where most pundits expected turnout to drop off from November, turnout is actually FIVE TIMES what it was in November.

That's the power of people.

Stronger than special interests or entrenched politicians, everyday Texans are taking matters into their own hands. Direct voter engagement — person to person conversations — eyeball to eyeball — more powerful than TV, or Facebook ads, or any of that phony rock 'n roll.

It's real people doing the really important work that wins elections.

But we're not done yet. We still have another weekend of action, where we hope to bring even more volunteers together to knock on doors for Eliz. And we'll have to really step up. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is chartering buses to bring people from across Texas — with promises of free food and hotels — to try to counter our efforts.

Gov. Greg Abbott busing in supporters

So... no matter where you live, I really need you to help us out this weekend in Fort Bend. Our ability to win this race — and ultimately the State House — hangs in the balance. Please join our remote volunteer call team to make calls between now and Election Day (January 28th) to help get out the vote for Eliz.

And if you'd like to help fund this work, we'll put your contributions to use helping to raise, organize and mobilize the volunteers who will do the hard work that wins elections.

The GOP is deploying buses to Fort Bend

Jason, we're in the home stretch.

Early voting has officially begun in Texas' 28th House District. Beto and the team have been working hard to turn out voters for Eliz Markowitz: together, we've knocked on more than 24,000 doors the last two weeks alone.

The good news is that the GOP sees the writing on the wall, and it's clear our grassroots power is making them nervous.

The bad news is that they're pulling out all the stops as a result. We just learned that Gov. Greg Abbott's campaign is deploying a fleet of buses to Fort Bend to beat us.

We've got to double our efforts before the election on January 28th. Can you make a donation today to ensure our team has the resources needed as we enter this final week?

I know a lot of you have asked why you should care so much about what happens in Texas, and it's a fair question — it might feel less important to you than a race in California. So here are three of my reasons:

  1. 38 electoral college votes and 36 seats in Congress are closer to flipping blue than they've been in decades.
  2. We only need 9 seats (out of 150) to flip the Texas State House. The lives of 28.7 million Texans will be heavily impacted depending on if we win or not.
  3. Texas has long been the poster-child of GOP strength. Flipping the state blue would send massive shockwaves through the rest of the country. We'd let everyone know that no self-described "Republican stronghold" is safe.

Our most important (and last) Weekend of Action for Eliz kicks off in two days, and the election itself is just four days after. We need your help to fund this final stretch of organizing work.

Please chip in to help Beto, Eliz, and the Powered By People team win this election on January 28th, and turn Texas blue in 2020. It all starts with this seat in Fort Bend.

Thanks for all your support, Jason. This race is coming down to the wire, and your help this weekend can — and will — push us over the edge.

We don’t want to wish we had done more

We're hosting another Weekend of Action this weekend — January 17th - 20th — before early voting starts on the 21st.

Jason,

Last weekend we knocked on 12,000 doors to turn out voters for Eliz Markowitz. She's running in the most critical special election in the state of Texas, and early voting starts on Tuesday. We don't have much time left, so we're hosting another huge weekend of action starting TONIGHT.

Winning this seat unlocks a much greater chance to flip the Texas legislature from Republican control. It also opens the door to winning an additional six U.S. House seats. That's why this is so important. We have to win here.

But organizing volunteers to win elections requires resources: not only for the canvassing and data tools that we use to organize the event, but for the food, drinks, gas, and more that we help volunteers with.

We need your help to fund this critical organizing work. The national implications are massive. This weekend alone, we're hoping to improve on our numbers from last week, and get 500 volunteers mobilized.

Can you chip in to help Powered By People flip the Texas legislature and win this special election with Eliz Markowitz? Your contributions are SO important to our efforts.

Donate $3

This is a big opportunity — not just for us, but for Texas and all of America. I don't want us to have any regrets. If we lose by 20 or 40 votes, I don't want to look back and think we could have done more.

We know the doors we knock will be the margin of victory here in Fort Bend. That means your support — whether it's inviting your Texas friends to join, or chipping in a few bucks to fuel our volunteer mobilization — can and will be the deciding factor.

Together, we have what it takes to pull this off. So, please, if you've been waiting to contribute to Powered By People, now's a great time to pitch in.

Thank you,

Dan Rowe

Helping from afar

This is a critical moment — not only for Texas, but for our country too. Together, we'll continue to rise up to these challengers, have important conversations in our communities, and win big.

Hey Jason. We've been real, real busy in Texas lately, and I wanted to catch you up on the work we're doing.

This past weekend, we held our first weekend of action for Eliz Markowitz. She's an incredible candidate running in a special election runoff for Texas House District 28.

More than 400 people signed up to volunteer for over 750 canvassing shifts, and we ended up knocking on more than 12,000 doors. It was an incredible experience, and we could tip the scales if we keep the momentum going. But we can't do it alone:

Can you donate $3 and help ensure we have the resources needed for our next Weekend of Action? We have a lot more work to do here in Fort Bend — and even MORE work flipping the rest of Texas. Your support is crucial.

Donate $3

Special elections like this one are often decided by a few thousand votes or less. And to reiterate — we just knocked on 12,000 doors. What that says is that our grassroots organizing can make all the difference in this race.

But grassroots organizing isn't enough all on its own. Running a statewide voter-contact program to flip Texas blue requires a lot of staff, volunteers, and resources. So even if you're not able to pitch in in person, please know that your support from afar — in whatever way possible — is absolutely invaluable to us.

If you can, please make a $3 donation to Powered By People today, and help us not only elect Eliz Markowitz in HD-28, but win big in the rest of Texas.

This is a critical moment. We only need to win 8 more seats in order to flip the Texas Legislature blue for the first time since 2001. It's only possible if we continue to work together.

Gratefully,

The Powered By People Team

This fight is of national significance

When Beto launched Powered By People, a lot of folks asked us: "Why should I care about what happens in Texas?" Give us a second to lay out the reasons:

Jason,

When Beto launched Powered By People, a lot of folks asked us: "Why should I care about what happens in Texas?" Give us a second to lay out the reasons:

  • Texas is changing. It's on the verge of flipping blue. For decades, Texas has been the largest Republican stronghold in the U.S. Now its 38 electoral college votes and 36 seats in Congress are in play.

  • We're just 9 seats away from flipping the Texas House. Out of 150 seats, that's all we need to take control of Texas' legislature. BIG implications for the nearly 1-in-12 Americans who live in this state.

  • Texas is ground zero for the fight on climate change and health care. Texas is the state with the most oil and gas, but it's also the state building the most wind energy. Plus, it's the largest state where a Republican government hasn't yet expanded Medicaid under Obamacare.

Beto and our entire Powered By People team are going all in on the most important special election happening right now in Texas — Eliz Markowitz's race for Texas HD 28. The election is just weeks away, and we've assembled a team to knock 10,000 doors this weekend.

But we need your help to fund this critical local organizing work that has huge national implications. This weekend alone we are hoping to get more than 400 volunteers mobilized, and that takes significant resources.

Can you chip in $3 to help Powered By People turn Texas blue and win Eliz Markowitz's special election in these final weeks? Whether you're from the state or not, your contributions are vitally important to our efforts.

Contribute $3

In the coming weeks, we'll be reaching out to get your help. Yes you! Because if you're from California, New York, West Virginia, or Idaho, you should care about what's happening on the ground here in Texas. It might very well change everything about our national politics.

Thanks for all you are doing,

Powered By People
