Our country's debt ceiling and budget negotiations are underway. Here are three things you should know:
- Republicans have tied the debt ceiling to the budget. This isn't normal. It's like paying for your groceries on your credit card, then deciding you don't want them and therefore shouldn't have to pay your credit card bill.
- By doing this, they are essentially hijacking the economy in order to implement their policies.
- Republicans want to implement work requirements for government programs. It's BS to claim Americans don't want stable, full-time employment, and data shows that these requirements don't end up pushing people into the workforce—they simply harm vulnerable seniors and children.
We don't have to choose between economic turmoil and cutting benefits for Americans. I'll keep advocating for a budget that puts families first.
Onward,
Katie
