Let's celebrate Mother's Day with more than flowers and create policies that support families.
When my daughter Betsy attended preschool at UC Irvine, where I taught, her preschool tuition cost more than the college classes next door.
As we get ready to celebrate Mother's Day, you'll see plenty of politicians posting about how much they love moms, and their respective votes. But let's skip the flowery graphics and actually pass legislation to provide families with paid family leave and affordable child care.
The high cost of child care and lack of paid family leave means it's often impossible for talented people to stay in the workforce and succeed at the highest levels—and our country is falling behind because of it. Affordable child care isn't just about kids: Our global competitors invest in families because it benefits a country's entire economy.
As a single mom of school aged kids, I know firsthand how the policies that affect women, children, and families have been put on the backburner.
In the Senate, I'll work to put families first and continue to advocate for paid family leave, affordable child care and other pro-family policies.
But I can only do this with your support. Will you consider chipping in to our movement today?
