Katie just reintroduced bipartisan legislation to lower child and elder care costs for families.
Right now, families can annually set aside $5,000 pre-tax for child care and elder care expenses. That's the same amount families could set aside in 1986, when this law was written.
We don't need a whiteboard to explain why that doesn't make sense. Child care costs have increased 220% since 1990, far outpacing inflation. For many families, child care is now their biggest expense—here in Orange County, the median cost of a year of infant care is $19,000.
