It's Elyse, daughter of Bob and Terese Casey and mother to two young boys. This Mother's Day, I wanted to share how I became a mom, as many parents share my story.
I was only able to give birth to my two healthy boys because of IVF. After learning that I have a condition that makes it much more challenging to become pregnant naturally, I had no choice but to undergo numerous fertility treatments to become a mom.
Despite the challenges I faced, I was very fortunate to have had access to the fertility treatments I needed to have my boys. I know the challenges and barriers many women and families across the country face when trying to start a family, because I lived it.
Everyone who wants to become a parent should be able to. Yet, across the country, reproductive technology, like IVF, is under threat by national Republicans. Battling fertility challenges is difficult enough, we don't need politicians adding even more barriers for women and families to have healthy children.
My dad has spent his career fighting for Pennsylvania's children and families. As his daughter, that has always made me extremely proud. Now, as a parent myself, I have a deeper appreciation of how vital his work is to ensure that every Pennsylvanian has the support they need to live the best life possible.
To all the mothers, grandmothers, mother figures, and women trying to become mothers — my dad sees you and will fight for your rights every day.
Happy Mother's Day.
Elyse
