TX-33 Shouldn’t Exist. That Doesn’t Mean I Won’t Fight for It.Because sometimes, to fix a broken system, you have to work within it.Folks, I’ve got a question for you: What do Rep. Barbara Jordan’s district in Houston and Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson’s district here in Dallas have in common? Well, I’ll tell you: They’re both majority-minority districts that have essentially been folded into others and disappeared by Texas Republicans’ racial gerrymandering scheme. At the behest of Donald Trump, the GOP in this state engaged in some of the most underhanded redistricting to date, effectively gutting folks' representation just to get the president the five extra seats he asked for. We’re talking about folks who had fought decades to get representation – now stripped of their voices in order for Republicans to cling to power. And I can tell you as a former civil rights lawyer, that’s not something I take lightly. TX-33 is part of Trump’s racial gerrymandering scheme. As it’s drawn today, it should not exist. Don’t believe me? Last November, a three-judge panel ruled 2-1 to block the new map from being used. But then, Donald Trump’s stacked Supreme Court stepped in and overturned the lower court’s ruling. So, here we are. This illogically drawn, blatantly gerrymandered district shouldn’t even be on the map. But it’s my home. It’s where I grew up, attended public schools, and watched my mom stretch every dollar to make it to payday. It’s where my wife, Aly, and I are raising our family. That’s why I’m going to fight like hell for it. I’m running to return to Congress to make sure kids across the 33rd District and all over Texas can get the same support and opportunities I had growing up. When I get to Washington, I will also fight for a federal ban on gerrymandering. But first, I need your help to get there. Together, I believe we can defeat the GOP’s attempt to rig our elections, flip the House blue, and make real progress for working families – because while they’ve done everything they can to try and reduce our power, they cannot take away our voices.
