Hi, it’s Hannah Pingree.
Wes Moore invited me to introduce myself and explain why I’m running for governor of Maine — and how I plan to stand up to Donald Trump.
I’m a mom of two teenage kids from a small island off the coast of Maine. I’m also a former Speaker of the Maine House, school board chair, and director of Maine’s “Office of the Future” who has spent my career taking on difficult fights and delivering results — from building housing to fighting the climate crisis.
When I was Speaker of the House, Maine was the first state in the country to pass marriage equality and have it be signed into law by our governor. As lead co-sponsor of that bill in 2009, it wasn’t the easy or politically safe thing to do, but it was the right thing to do for families. So we brought people together, stood our ground, and won that fight.
That’s how I’ve always approached public service and that’s the kind of governor I’ll be.
This election underscores just how important the job of governors is — protecting our rights, defending our values, and making sure families aren’t left to pay the price for the dysfunction in Washington.
Donald Trump is counting on governors to be intimidated by his threats, distracted by his chaos, or too divided to fight back. I won’t be.
When his administration attacks our rights, our health care, our schools, or the people who make Maine their home, I will use every tool available to fight back. I’ll speak out, take action, partner with other governors, and take it to the courts. And while Trump works to divide us, I’ll stay focused on making life more affordable, expanding opportunity, and delivering results for Maine families.
I’ve taken on tough fights before. With you beside me, I’m ready for this one.
