AI needs rules and it needs them now

America must act before Big Tech does irreversible harm.

Jason,   In my last email, I talked about the warning coming from AI insiders: The people building this technology admit that they may not be able to control it.   We should believe them—and stop pretending that AI companies can police themselves.   I represent Silicon Valley. I know the people building this technology, and I believe AI can improve lives. But I also know what happens when powerful companies pursue limitless profit without accountability: The rich get richer while workers and communities suffer the costs. We can already see it happening with the massive data centers powering the AI boom.   These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, sending utility prices skyrocketing. Yet the people living nearby are too often shut out of decisions about where they are built, how local resources are used, and who pays the price.   We cannot trust tech companies to make those decisions for us.   SIGN IF YOU AGREE: Innovation cannot come at the expense of our communities. Our responsibility is to protect working people.   That is why I introduced a Data Center Bill of Rights. It is based on a simple principle: Innovation cannot come at the public’s expense.   The Data Center Bill of Rights:   ✅ Bans data centers in residential areas and on farmland ✅ Gives communities the right to oppose data center projects through a transparent public process ✅ Allows communities to demand that their utility bills do not increase ✅ Protects statewide moratoriums on data center construction until safeguards are in place to prevent higher energy costs and protect local water supplies ✅ Requires data centers to use clean, reliable energy and meet pollution limits   Big Tech cannot be allowed to set its own rules while everyone else bears the risks.   Whether AI companies are building powerful new systems or constructing massive data centers, they must be accountable to the people whose safety, resources, and livelihoods are affected.   ADD YOUR NAME: AI companies cannot be allowed to write their own rules.
