I'm a single mom of three loosely-supervised children here in Irvine. Before running for office, I was a law professor and consumer protection attorney who worked to hold Wall Street accountable.
After the election of Trump, I decided to run for Congress against a Republican incumbent. I ran as a progressive in a purple district—proudly supporting Medicare for All and bold action on climate change. We won, and I headed to Congress with a tool from my teaching days—a whiteboard (I really do carry one in my purse).
That whiteboard helped me find my voice in Congress. It helped us expose the incompetence of Trump Administration officials. It allowed me to show the math behind corporate greed and skyrocketing profits to hold CEOs accountable. Those whiteboard moments translated to real wins—passing legislation to lower drug costs, raise rates on polluters, and address inflation.
In January, I announced I'm running for the U.S. Senate. I'm running because Californians deserve a warrior fighting for them, taking on the challenges of tomorrow. Big corporations and the politicians they fund have rigged the rules against working people, making it hard to get ahead. I'm running to stand up to corruption and shake up the status quo.
Polls have shown us with a very narrow lead in this race. But during the last three fundraising quarters another candidate has outraised us—thanks to large donations from wealthy donors. Roughly a third of voters remain undecided, so catching up financially and being able to reach those undecided voters is critical.
We can only win this race with the support of grassroots donors like you. That's not just a talking point, it's true. Our average donation is $25, and I'm the only candidate in this race rejecting federal lobbyist money.
