For over a century, folks across the country have come together on Labor Day to honor the generations of workers who organized and fought for workplace protections that made Americans safer on the job and helped build the middle class.
These were men like my grandfather who, even at age 11, knew that working in the coal mines was a dark and dangerous way to make a living, but he took on the work as a young boy anyway to help his family make ends meet.
These were women like Pennsylvania's own Mae Krier, one of the original Rosie the Riveters, who served her country by joining the workforce to support our military during World War II.
While we have come a long way over the last century, the work isn't over. Far too many of our neighbors and workers still lack basic benefits like paid sick leave and family leave. Here in Pennsylvania and across the country, workers are still fighting for a liveable wage, decent benefits, and safe working conditions.
As Senator, I am proud to continue this fight and build on the legacies of folks like my grandfather and Mae. I have fought for legislation that would invest millions of dollars into creating good-paying jobs in Pennsylvania, safeguard thousands of pensions, and protect the right to organize a union.
To the millions of men and women who get up every day and work to provide for their families and strengthen their communities: you are the people who make America the greatest country in the world.
Happy Labor Day, Pennsylvania. I hope I can count on you to fight alongside me and all those working every day to provide for their families and build a better life. We must show support for workers now more than ever.
