As you’ve probably already seen by now, last week, we held primary elections here in Texas – and for the GOP, it ended in a runoff. There’s been a lot of talk about how costly the runoff in Texas is going to be for Republicans. The truth is that sitting Sen. John Cornyn has been spending like crazy on Texas airwaves to get ahead of his primary opponent, Ken Paxton. And even still, things aren’t looking good for either candidate, as Democrats are now in a position to win in Texas for the first time in decades. To put it bluntly, this runoff is driving the GOP into a panic. And that’s exactly what I wanted to avoid for Democrats when I made the decision to drop out of the Senate race last December. The infighting and airing of each other’s dirty laundry that you see happening between Cornyn and Paxton right now is the same thing I saw in the path ahead for Democrats. We had so many compelling candidates throwing their hats into the ring for this Senate seat because we knew just how vulnerable it is. I knew that we would face a runoff of our own if we had three strong candidates in this race, and that would just lead to a cutthroat competition costing millions of dollars. That’s not how you unify a party and make it stronger. It’s how you weaken it and ruin your chances of putting a check on a MAGA party that refuses to do what’s best for working families. With our one chance at turning Texas blue and our already uphill battle at taking back the Senate in 2026, I decided to put my ego aside and drop out of the race for Senate. And now that the Democrats have their candidate advancing to the general election in November while the GOP struggles through a bruising runoff, I’m more confident than ever that it was the right thing to do. But now, the irony of it all is that I’m facing the one thing I wanted to avoid for Senate Democrats. I’m headed for a runoff in my new race for Texas’ 33rd Congressional District. This district is my home. It’s where I was born and raised. It’s where I’m raising my children with my wife, Aly. And I’m ready to fight like hell to make sure the people who live here are taken care of. And the reality is that I’m the best – and only – Democrat in this race who can get the job done. In 2018, I ran in a competitive primary just like this one. I won the runoff. And then, I did the unthinkable, defeating a 22-year Republican incumbent. I know exactly what it takes to win a runoff – and I’ve got the coalition, the record, and the grit to do it again on May 26. The Texas GOP may have gerrymandered this district in a desperate attempt to cling to power. But with a former civil rights lawyer running to represent the very folks they’re trying to silence, they stand no chance. So as we head into this next chapter of our campaign, it’s supporters like you, who chipped in from the very beginning, who will help me win this runoff election on May 26. Will you help finish what we started together by donating $15, or whatever you can spare, to ensure we win this runoff election and send a strong Democratic fighter like me back to Congress? Thanks for believing in this campaign. Colin Paid for by Allred for Texas |
