My friends, five years ago today, I was sworn in as Attorney General of California.
On this anniversary, I’m reflecting on what we’ve done so far, and the work that lies ahead.
Over the last five years, we’ve built a wall of protection around this state. A legal fortress around our freedoms and our values that no one — not even the most unlawful president — can tear down.
From Day One, my vision for the California Department of Justice has been that we keep Californians safe and serve as the nation’s largest and most powerful check on the abuse of power. And we’ve done it:
We’ve put public safety first, and successfully combatted fentanyl traffickers, gun traffickers, and human traffickers. We’ve held greedy corporations accountable, from Big Pharma’s fraudulent billing practices to Big Oil’s assault on our environment to Big Landlords colluding to drive up prices. We’ve secured justice for the innocent targets of fraudsters and schemesters.
Through it all, we’re defending our foundational rights and freedoms from the ongoing assault of a federal government and President who are hell-bent on tearing them down.
And importantly, we are securing the California Dream for the next generation.
That’s what this is all about.
I’m the child of two social justice warriors who were fighting for democracy and human rights. They raised me to believe that people power is the most potent power.
From the civil rights movement to the farmworkers’ movement, and in the fight for democracy in countries around the world, we, the people, are responsible for transforming our future.
This is work worth doing, every way you look at it.
Five years into this job, I am fiercely committed to doing whatever it takes to protect Californians — which is why I’m incredibly proud to be on the ballot for re-election this year.
Together, we will stop unlawful power grabs from the federal government, defend our immigrant communities, protect reproductive freedom, and stand up to abuse of power wherever it appears.
Because we have proven that when California fights, we win.
But no single person can do these things alone — I will need you with me to continue this work.
Will you support my re-election campaign today with a contribution of $25, or whatever amount is meaningful to you? The link to give is right here: secure.actblue.com/donate/rb-email-26
We are at our strongest against the rising tides of tyranny when we stand together, each of us clear-eyed and committed to the roles we must play.
I’m ready. And I’m profoundly grateful to have you with me in this movement for freedom and justice for all.
Thank you for everything.
