Every decision I make starts with one question: How do we make sure no one gets left behind?
That question is personal to me. When I was growing up, I couldn’t have imagined becoming an Army Captain or CEO. I certainly never thought I’d become Maryland’s first Black governor.
My dad passed away when I was 3. I had handcuffs on my wrists by 11. My mother didn’t get a job with benefits until I was 14.
Looking back, it’s easy to see how my story could’ve gone a very different way.
But I didn’t get here on my own. My journey was shaped by people who stepped up and invested in me — even when they didn’t have to.
I’ll never stop fighting for the next generation, because every child deserves the chance to succeed, no matter where they come from.
It’s why we’re making historic investments in Maryland’s public schools. Fighting to make every community safer. And helping young Marylanders find a pathway to success with the Maryland Corps and Service Year Option.
