Across the country, Republican state legislatures are running the same playbook — and the American people are paying the price.
They’re threatening our freedoms, trying to weaken our communities, and putting power into the hands of people who already have too much of it.
In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott and Republican leaders like Dustin Burrows have pushed private school voucher legislation that drains funding from public classrooms, expanded state cooperation with ICE (as the contractors making billions from running detention centers cut checks to the politicians making them rich), dismissed the urgency of the climate crisis even as Texas communities face increasingly severe and deadly weather events, and worked to strip recognition of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ historical figures from public life.
Meanwhile, Christian Menefee is pressing the EPA for answers about contamination threatening communities in his district, fighting for clean drinking water, and demanding thorough investigations into recent ICE shootings. He also introduced the Block the Bombs Act, and made it clear that he'll only answer to the people he represents — not corporate interests or billionaires.
In Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee signed racist redistricting maps designed to silence Black voters and leaders, supported legislation restricting transgender students' rights and access to gender-affirming care, and backed measures leading to book bans in schools.
Meanwhile, Justin J. Pearson has refused to back down in the face of political attacks. He’s fought back against those racist maps that drew him out of his own district, been one of the most fearless voices for meaningful gun safety legislation since the Covenant School shooting, and continues speaking out against ICE’s campaign of cruelty while fighting for the communities Tennessee Republicans keep trying to erase.
In New York, Republican Mike Lawler has spent his time defending Trump, backing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and calling for even more U.S. military action against Iran — all while opposing every policy that would actually lower costs and expand protections for working families.
Meanwhile, Mayor Zohran Mamdani continues to deliver on the promises he made to working New Yorkers. He expanded bus service between Brooklyn and the Bronx, implemented a Click-to-Cancel policy to protect consumers from predatory subscription traps, championed a rent freeze for stabilized tenants, launched free 2-K applications, and continues to advocate for abolishing ICE and building an immigration system rooted in dignity and justice.
That’s the difference between us and them — and it’s why the work we’re doing at Leaders We Deserve is critical. We exist to find, fund, and fight for leaders who will not only defend the interests of working people against Republicans, corporations, and billionaires, but make progress towards a vision that gives us hope for the future.
