Remember last month when Mai Vang absolutely crushed her California primary?
In a little over 100 days, she’ll be headed to the General Election to face off with Doris Matsui again — and you need to know exactly what kind of opponent Mai is up against.
When Matsui realized she was facing the first serious Democratic challenger in 20 years since taking over her husband’s seat (in total, they’ve held this seat for 45+ years) she didn’t show up for her constituents or agree to debate Mai on the issues that matter to her district.
She chose to use her campaign website to signal corporate PACs to throw their weight behind her MAGA Republican opponent who wants more ICE presence in a community already reeling from their cruelty, and supports advancing Trump’s policies — all in hopes of knocking Mai out of the top two so she wouldn’t have to face her in November.
That’s the kind of leader Doris Matsui is. One who would rather help a MAGA candidate advance to the General than pass the torch to the next generation.
But it didn’t work.
Not only did Mai advance to the general election in November, she got more votes than Matsui.
That’s because Mai has real roots in her community. She knows exactly what the voters of her district need right now because she’s lived that reality her entire life — as a working mom, as the daughter of Hmong refugees who grew up on SNAP and Medicaid, and as a Sacramento City Council member who has been showing up for her neighbors long before anyone was paying attention.
That’s why they showed up in force for the rally I held with Mai just before her election!
But I have to be honest, Mai is still facing an uphill battle. Unlike her opponent, she’s refused every dollar of corporate PAC money in this race. That means she depends on dedicated grassroots supporters like you to sustain her fight.
