There’s a billionaire-backed voter suppression campaign happening in Virginia right now, and I need you to know about it.
This month, Virginia voters will decide on a redistricting referendum that would allow the state legislature to redraw congressional districts. This is a direct response to the aggressive Republican gerrymandering in Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri that is stripping Black and Latino communities of political power ahead of the midterms.
Republicans want to stop the referendum from passing, and the way they’re going about it should make your blood boil.
A MAGA-linked dark money PAC bankrolled by Peter Thiel, one of Trump’s billionaire allies, has been flooding Black communities with deliberately misleading mailers exploiting images from the civil rights movement to manipulate them into voting against the referendum.
They even misused a quote from Obama — taking an old speech completely out of context to imply that he opposes the referendum.
Let that sink in.
They’re trying to twist the legacy of the civil rights movement, of fearless freedom fighters who organized relentlessly for political power and risked their lives for the right to vote, into a tool to manipulate Black voter turnout and rig the map.
It’s shameful, and it’s voter suppression with a fresh coat of paint.
