I get asked all the time — usually by older people — how we get more people to care about democracy. They ask about young people, but also people of all ages.
And I get why they’re asking.
With Trump’s march to authoritarianism top of mind, democracy feels imperiled. And more and more people feel like politics as usual is not working for them.
Here’s what I think: People will care about democracy when they see it working in their lives. When their rent is stable and their streets get fixed, they see that the government actually can work on their behalf. They witness democracy in action.
