Friends, I want to take a few minutes to talk to you about something incredibly important — California’s fentanyl crisis.
Fentanyl doesn’t discriminate between rich and poor or urban and rural. Right now, fentanyl addiction is devastating families in every corner of our state.
This crisis requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both public safety and public health:
- We must investigate and prosecute fentanyl traffickers responsible for bringing this deadly drug into our state.
- We need to educate young people about the dangers of fentanyl to prevent addiction in the first place.
- And we need to support treatment and recovery for those struggling with substance use.
My office has secured more than $2 billion in funding from settlements with the opioid industry for their role in fueling the opioid crisis that helps fund addiction and education programs throughout our state.
Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are collaborating every day to fight the supply of fentanyl before the deadly drugs reach our communities, and we will continue to do so.
Last week, after a long-term investigation, we arrested a major trafficker in Arcadia, seizing 8.5 million potentially deadly doses of fentanyl.
Bottom line: If you traffic fentanyl in California, we will investigate you, we will stop your operations, and we will hold you accountable.
Arresting those responsible for the flow of fentanyl into our neighborhoods will save lives — but this fight goes beyond any single arrest. We will not relent in our ongoing work to confront the fentanyl crisis that is poisoning our communities, taking innocent lives, and tearing families apart.
Thank you for reading, and for supporting this important work.
