Jason, we’ve got big news to announce today:
We’re endorsing Abbas Alawieh for Michigan’s 2nd State Senate District!
Abbas is a lifelong Michigander and former congressional Chief of Staff who built a reputation on Capitol Hill as a legislative juggernaut.
Working for progressive champions like Reps. Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib, Abbas authored dozens of bills and amendments that passed the U.S. House.
Now, Abbas is running for Michigan State Senate to put working families first, ensure dignity for our elders, and fight for safety on our roads.
Abbas’s competitive open primary is coming up fast on August 4.
Throughout his career, Abbas has been a champion for change — orchestrating policy action that kept families housed during the pandemic, blocked unjust deportations, and secured billions of dollars to remove toxic lead water distribution pipes.
A public health advocate by training, Abbas moved back home to Michigan to care for his mother after her cancer diagnosis. He saw firsthand how families in need of compassionate care are hit with predatory, life-altering medical bills instead.
In Lansing, Abbas will put working families first. He is ready to fight for affordable childcare, defend economic security programs for seniors and people with disabilities, and pass the MiCare Act for single-payer healthcare in Michigan. He is also ready to tackle traffic fatalities on our roads as a public health crisis, funding real interventions like mass transit and walkable streets rather than relying on carceral systems.
Abbas is exactly the kind of public servant Leaders We Deserve is proud to support. He doesn’t take a dime of corporate PAC money. Instead, he’s relying on grassroots support from people like you who are tired of the status quo.
Abbas’s opponent in this open primary is the definition of the corporate-backed status quo.
State Representative Erin Byrnes is heavily bankrolled by massive special interests, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Comcast, and corporate real estate PACs. Her record reflects it: she recently "accidentally" sponsored an anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bill written by Republicans and marched it right through the House floor.
We cannot send corporate-backed politicians to fight a right-wing machine. We need leaders with real backbone and deep community roots.
District 2 is a safe blue seat, meaning whoever wins this primary wins the seat. Abbas has already secured the backing of Senator Bernie Sanders and local labor unions, but he needs the early resources to counter the corporate money flooding into his opponent's coffers.
We have a real opportunity to do something big and elect a young progressive leader that will truly fight for the people of his district instead of another establishment-backed corporate sellout. But it will only happen with your support, Jason.
Thank you,
David Hogg
