Abdul El-Sayed is a doctor, epidemiologist, and the son of an Egyptian immigrant born and raised in Michigan. He grew up attending Michigan public schools and went on to become a Rhodes Scholar earning dual doctorates from Oxford and Columbia before coming home to serve the community that raised him.
He put that training to work rebuilding Detroit’s Health Department after the city’s bankruptcy left it gutted, then ran Wayne County’s health department serving over 1.8 million residents. He got free glasses for kids who couldn’t afford them, ripped lead out of Detroit schools in the wake of the Flint water crisis, led an initiative to launch 100 free public health vending machines across his county to dispense life-saving Narcan to curb opioid overdoses, launched an initiative for air quality monitors to hold Marathon Petroleum accountable in Michigan’s most polluted zipcode, and led a program working to cancel up to $700 million in medical debt for 300,000 Michiganders.
In Congress, Abdul will fight to pass Medicare for All and cancel medical debt nationwide, carrying on the same fight he’s already led at the local level. He’ll push to get corporate money out of politics for good, champion a national renters’ bill of rights so tenants know exactly what protections they’re entitled to, and go after the hedge funds and corporate landlords buying up housing stock and driving rent through the roof. He’ll also fight to pass the PRO act and defend every worker’s right to organize, bargain collectively, and be treated with dignity.
Listen, Jason: AIPAC, Big Pharma, the NRA and every other corporate interest used to buying whatever they want in Washington would love nothing more than to see Abdul lose this race. Outside groups poured over $70 million into defeating him in the primary alone.

His opponent, Republican Mike Rogers, is Trump’s hand-picked candidate, running to protect the same broken system that’s failed working families for years. He took over $1 million from Big Pharma as a Congressman, voted against letting Medicare negotiate lower drug prices, and supported huge cuts to SNAP benefits putting hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who rely on social safety nets to survive at risk.
