Last night proved something huge: We have what it takes to challenge power and truly reshape the future of the Democratic Party.
We're absolutely fired up that Christian Menefee and Julio Salinas have both come in first in their primaries in Texas and advanced to runoff elections. They didn't just run strong campaigns, they forced the establishment to put up a fight, and showed exactly what people-powered organizing can do.
Tuesday's primaries were one of the first real tests of what we can accomplish. Voters showed up in record breaking numbers, driven by the audacious young leaders of our movement who refuse to sit on the sidelines and settle for politics as usual.
In Texas' House District 41, Julio ran on fighting for working families in the Valley — a livable wage, stronger public schools, and affordable health care. His advancement last night shows the hunger voters have for someone who truly represents their values, and will answer to them, not corporate PACs or special interests.
And in Christian's race in Texas' 18th congressional district, he challenged a two decade incumbent and proved that his commitment to taking on corporate greed and fighting to make life better for working people is resonating in a huge way with a new generation of voters. He's showing us what it looks like to lead with integrity, and be accountable to the people he serves.
This is exactly the future Leaders We Deserve is fighting for: A Democratic Party that doesn't compromise its values, and knows how to win.
But our work isn't done — winning this will come down to turnout. May 26 will be our next battle, and thanks to the thousands of voters who made their voices heard last night, we have a real shot at victory. We need all hands on deck to keep our momentum going and win.
