The dangerous rise of white supremacy

We have to fight back.

Jason, Today I want to have a serious conversation about what's happening in our country and the dangerous rise of extremism and white supremacy. For years, we've seen the rhetoric of hate and division used to distract us from the real threats to our communities. We are told to fear immigrant families coming to our country in search of a better life — people who want exactly what our own ancestors wanted: safety and opportunity. But if we're being honest about what truly threatens the fabric of our democracy, it's the rising tide of white supremacy and domestic extremism. The numbers don't lie. Over the last decade, white supremacists have been responsible for the vast majority of extremist-related murders in the U.S. In some years, nearly 80% of all domestic extremist killings were committed by those with ties to white supremacist ideologies and right-wing groups. This isn't a "fringe" problem anymore. It has moved from the shadows of the internet into the highest halls of power. It is deeply disturbing to see Donald Trump continue to fan the flames of these hateful ideas — from the racist attacks against President Obama to ICE terrorizing our communities. We cannot stay silent while our democracy is under attack and our values are hollowed out. It's time to call this what it is: a national security crisis and a moral failing. We should be much more concerned about the person radicalized in an internet chat room than the mom working three jobs to give her kids a better life.
