Here's why I voted against it.
First off, thanks so much for helping us hit our May fundraising goal. Because of grassroots supporters we're entering the final month of the fundraising quarter in a strong position.
That was welcome news as I boarded an early morning flight from DC to LAX following last night's vote on the debt ceiling. I voted no, and I want to quickly explain why:
The vote wrongly pitted important things against each other: Preventing default and protecting our environment. Both of these things are non-negotiables in my eyes, but this legislation was filled with giveaways for Big Oil companies. We can't give in to polluters whose lobbyists continue to have an outsized influence over our legislation.
The legislation passed in the House with a mix of support from Democrats and Republicans. It will raise the federal debt limit for two years, but Republicans demanded a host of policy changes and spending caps in exchange, and these will have serious consequences for working people, families, and our environment.
I'll always vote to put Californians ahead of giant corporations. Thanks for reading, and thank you for your support!
Katie
