I'm often asked why California's Senate election matters. If we're so likely to elect a Democrat, why should people care?
While Democrats often end up taking the same votes, there's so much more to our job than just voting yes or no.
Much of the important work we do here in Washington is what people don't always see. Realistically, we can't all be a champion or expert on every single issue. So each elected official decides where to most focus their time, energy, and capital. Here's where I plan to focus mine in the U.S. Senate:

Since being elected in 2018, I've been laser-focused on the environment, and my work holding Big Oil accountable differentiates me from many of my colleagues. I've always been willing to push for aggressive climate change legislation, reject money from the fossil fuel industry, and treat climate change as the existential threat it is. That includes making sure Democrats are correctly messaging around climate—and not letting Republicans convince voters that Democrats are ruining lives with electric stoves.

Lowering the cost of housing. We have to stop running our housing policy to benefit Wall Street. The federal government needs to take a far more active role in creating affordable housing.

Clean up corruption and shake up the status quo. Special interest groups and corporations have had an outsized influence in Washington for far too long. Too many Members of Congress and Supreme Court Justices are beholden to donors or their own stock portfolios. If we want to enact gun violence protection, restore the right to an abortion, or lower drug costs, we have to get to the root of the problem here in Washington.
It's not enough just to have a [D] next to your name. We need to elect Democrats who are willing to speak truth to power and tackle our country's biggest issues.
